Week One
Options and Possibilities!
So to kick this off the focus is on making clay, digging clay, primitive ceramics, or early history of ceramics! Make a plan for what you would like to focus on. Are you going to try and make some clay and sculpt a wee little clay object? Or are you more interested in just learning about how different cultures have worked with clay in the past? Or would you like to explore different videos about how to make a kiln or your own tools? Here are some things to help guide you in your decision. . .

If you are more interested in the historical context of ceramics and how different cultures have utilized the clay in their area dig into it. Explore and share what you find out about ancient Greek vases or the Mimbres in Africa make giant ceramics pots and how do they fire them?

First I thought about what do I want to know and share. . . then googled primitive ceramics. I had seen this video a few years back and was just amazed at how he builds this hut from materials in the environment. There are many more examples of primitive ceramics. . . have fun exploring and sharing what you find!

Making Clay: How can we use our available resources to create a clay type material?
These are just a few resources I came across that offer unique ways of working with mud, flour, salt, water, heat, and sun... I am excited to try out the baker clay and play around with creating a unique sculptural form. If you are feeling ambitious the link to digging your own clay has some great tips and a video of the process. If you are interested in making salt dough clay or digging some clay here are my 1st two videos from last marking period for inspiration. . . The salt dough clay was fun, but look up air dry clay it is one of my goal for this week to make some and see how it works!
1st ever Maclay Video Production... enjoy the mess!
In the spirit of all things TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behaviors) Claire and I embarked upon the hot mess of a video, but had a ton of fun doing it! I learned a lot about set up, holding the phone horizontally (duh), uploading to You Tube (thanks Mr. Martin), and working with the actors can be quite interesting. Hope you enjoy watching the Maclay's clay making adventures. The Salt dough is super easy to make and actually quite fun to play with! Stay tuned for our next clay filled mess... how to dig some clay! |

Maclay Video Production #2. . . Can You Dig It!
Well we dug it! Check out our most recent quest to find a way to get some clay. Of course this will not be an option for everyone, but it sure was fun to get out there and get messy! Those of you who have had me in class know I have my squirrel moments. . . well this time it was a great blue heron moment :) Definitely an improvement from my 1st video attempt, but there is always room to grow :) Hope you enjoy it and get the sense of what it is like to dig some creek clay. Next up will be how did we process it and what can we do with it. Personally, I am dead set on making one of those Hikaru Dorodango spheres. Claire already made a snowman. |
