Irresistible Cups and Pretty Planters!
So. . . what makes a cup irresistible? If you were looking at the demo table full of 60 different cups fresh out of the glaze firing what would make yours stand out and say "pick me up" or "check me out" ? Another thing I like to ponder in regards to cups is what is the cup best suited for. . . I am very particular about which mugs I use for coffee vs. tea. I enjoy a more standard form for my coffee mugs and even have my Sunday favorite. If I were in the mood for a nice cup of tea, I have some go to handmade ceramic ones that I just love. So one of the themes for this next adventures is cups, cups, cups!!! How can you make them? What is the history of the cup? How have different ceramic artists tackled combining functional form with uniques aesthetic qualities?
To add some creative options to this adventure you could also make some pretty pots for some pretty plants :) If you want to mix it up you could do 2 cups and a planter, or ALL planters, or any variation YOU JUST NEED NO LESS THAN 3 :) With that in mind your explorations can vary and you must consider how the FORM meets the FUNCTION! Here are some options for this week!- Sketch 3 forms you would like to make. How would you make them?
- Do some research on different techniques to make cups. Could you make them with slabs, or coil building, or the wheel. YOU can choose the technique that best suits your idea! Just try and build off of your strengths. . . but if you want to stretch a bit try something new! |
This video was made in the beginning of the remote learning adventures. . . still has some good points about CUPS and what makes them irresistible :) But the context is dated and not everything applies the the current mode we are in :)
Here are a few cups I find irresistible.

Mass Production vs. Hand Made
I found it interesting to see how mass production of ceramics is so different than good old Jon the Potter's way of producing cups.
