Masks
So these days when you Google "mask making" the 1st ones that pop up are related to face masks for these crazy days. Those are not the masks we are talking about here in our virtual ceramics world this week.
There is so much you can explore with this topic. . . What is the oldest mask and what did they make it out of? How and why was it used? How do contemporary ceramic artists work connect to historical styles or motifs? What specific ceramics techniques could be used in making masks? Also, what design aspects would need to be considered? Is it functional or decorative? Personally, I like some of the Inuit masks and the way they are used in telling stories about the Inuit and there way of life. They are not ceramic masks, but still quite interesting! Have a great time digging into this and don't forget to share what you learned! Here are some options for this week. . .- Sketch 2 different masks you would like to make some day. How would you make them?
- If you have some clay give it a shot and make a small mask. - Do some research on different techniques used to make ceramic masks. Could you make them with slabs, or coil building, or make a mold? - Dig into some history about masks and how different cultures made and used them. Share what you learned. - Find an artist known for making ceramic masks and report on that artists. - If you are feeling adventurous try and make a mask out of paper you can wear! Here are some resources that might be helpful. . . |
