WOW... what a crazy two weeks since I last met in person with my ceramics classes. It is unreal how quickly we have had to completely change our normal ways of experiencing life together. I wish I had taken in a bit more of the moment that Friday morning when we discussed some of the potential ways we could still connect and create if we were not able to come into to school. Since then my mind has been racing with ideas, challenges, and how to best provide an opportunity to connect through art and have some fun doing it. Yesterday I kept having those familiar feelings of getting ready for the 1st day of school. Will this be fun for the students? How can I ensure that there is choice in the process? How can I help cultivate curiosity and bring back that sense of wonder we all had as children? These are just a few of the questions I keep asking myself when trying to design a way to share information with you, build connections, and make the best out of a situation that is beyond our control.
What we can control is our mindset and how this first week plays out depend A LOT on what type of mindset we choose to have. Let's be real... this is a far from ideal way to experience ceramics! Not everyone has 50 lbs of clay lying around, but what we do all have is the opportunity to think outside the box. So... here are some ways you can do that this week in our world of ceramics.

Thinking outside the box is a core artistic behavior. So... here we are in the thick of reimagining what a hands-on, materials based learning experience is in the regards to distance learning. Honestly my mind has been spinning...
- How can we work with clay when we don't have any at home? - How can we share and connect through our art making? - What resources can we use to create, experience, and appreciate the craft? - How can what we explore connect to our curiosity and deepen our sense of wonder? - How can we use this unique opportunity to build our community? I keep coming back to the artistic behaviors and the question "what do artists do?" Well... we problem solve, take risks, reflect, develop skills, collaborate, have a global awareness, create original work, and develop a personal voice. It is my hope that we can play, share, connect, and be present in the act of making and learning new things together! |
